Meeting with Ohio State Representative Michael Duffy (R)

October 7, 2015

On Monday October 5, 2015 the Spanish American Committee (Cleveland, Ohio) along with the Ohio Commission of Hispanic Latino Affairs and the Ohio Hispanic Coalition of Columbus met with Ohio State Representative Michael Duffy (R) to advocate for changes to Ohio policy so non-profit organizations (NPO) can have access to contracts with the State of Ohio and other government entities.

Currently, non-profit organizations are unable to submit responses to proposals/bids due to criteria that are currently in place. For example a Hispanic NPO cannot submit a response for a bid/proposal to offer Spanish language translation services.

During our meeting we were able to discuss workforce development issues as well as access to government contracts. Representative Duffy gave us his full attention, was genuine about the issue we brought to his attention and was able to see how a change in this policy could be beneficial not only for Hispanic/Latino NPOs but NPOs in general to develop avenues of sustainability by offering services/goods to governmental entities.  OCHLA strategically chose to meet with Representative Duffy who sits on the Commerce and Labor committee and is a supporter of Hispanic/Latino issues. He will be working with us to formulate a bill.  As developments arise we will be sure to keep everyone informed.
